Patients' Stories: Lauren Burns

When I was 8, my parents consulted with a new doctor who began to re-diagnose my toe. Unfortunately, before they were able to diagnose my toe, I became so sick that my new doctor took x-rays and scans of my chest. They discovered several tumors, the largest of which was the size of an orange.

I went to emergency late that evening in February of 2005 where we learned that I had metastatic cancer. They did not know what kind of cancer it was at that time. I had more tests and biopsies of both my lungs and toes. We learned that I had Ewing’s Sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. I underwent chemotherapy for a year followed by radiation.

During that year, I also had numerous surgeries to remove tumors from my chest and to amputate my toe. I spent many weeks in the hospital during my chemotherapy treatments and surgeries. I am now in remission and have been for several years. I hope that research will improve early detection and cancer treatment. [back...]
